Public Involvement »

Public involvement for the Rancho Cordova Interchange Project is very important to the City. Throughout each phase of the project, the City invites you to participate and provide valuable input on issues related to the future interchange. The outreach program designed for the project includes a number of different tactics to maximize public participation in, and awareness of, the Project. At the onset of the Project, the City compiled a mailing list of over 2,500 contacts that includes local property owners and occupants located within the project area, as well as key community leaders and stakeholders. The mailing list was later extended in May 2007 to include an additional 3,600 contacts. A project Web site was also developed and will be maintained throughout the project to provide up to date information and materials.

To date, the City has held two Public Open Houses, as well as met with a number of different community organizations and local elected officials to provide information and garner input on the project.

The first open house took place on July 27, 2005 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the CSUS Aquatic Center. The purpose of the meeting was to educate the attending public about the project background, schedule of phases and gather initial input on conceptual interchange configurations. To promote the meeting, the City mailed newsletters to the entire database of 2,500 contacts; distributed media releases to local publications; publicized the meeting through local community and business organizations; and called over 150 contacts to remind them to attend. As a result of these efforts, approximately 160 community members attended the meeting.

The second open house took place on June 7, 2007 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm also at the CSUS Aquatic Center. The purpose of the meeting was to provide an update and present the proposed project alternative. To promote the meeting, the City mailed newsletters to the entire database of 2,500 contacts, plus an additional 3,600 newsletters to the extended contacts; newsletters were hand-delivered to the Rancho Cordova City Council’s office, Supervisor MacGlashan’s office, and the front desk of the Rancho Cordova City Hall; media announcements were sent and published in the Grapevine Independent and Sacramento Bee; and approximately 150 calls were made and 300 emails were sent to contacts reminding them to attend. As a result of these efforts, approximately 135 community members attended the meeting.

Both meetings were held in open house format where the community could view displays and talk one-on one with key project team members. Each meeting also included a formal presentation and a question and answer session. Public input was recorded through comment cards and through notes taken during the question and answer portion of the meetings.

Also in late 2007 the City of Rancho Cordova began meeting with a designated Community Advisory Committee (CAC). The group meets regularly to discuss project updates and provide input related to design and landscaping.

A public meeting will be scheduled for Summer 2009 during the extended 60 day circulation period of the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR)/Environmental Assessment (EA) slated to begin Spring 2009. The purpose of this meeting is to allow community members to comment on the Draft EIR/EA document. All comments will be included in the Final EIR/EA. A public hearing will take place in late Fall 2008 when the Final EIR/EA document is ready to go before the City Council for approval and adoption.

Throughout each phase, the City will continue to provide updated project information on the web site and project newsletters. The City will also continue to meet with key community and business organizations and other key stakeholders to ensure continued, open communication regarding the Interchange Project.
